Animal Classifications

We’re kicking off our Zoology unit my studying how Animals are classified. I’m using general resources from EasyPeasy’s Zoology page here,  the lapbook pages from Homeschool Share here and lots of activities and things I’ve found online.  I’ll link those were I can.

Day 1 we focused on the first few levels of taxonomy – Kingdom and Phyllum.   We put this sheet together and they filled out information based on their individual levels of learning (I’m teaching 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 10th at this point).  My goal was to get them to understand that the animals narrow after each level of classification.    After that the girls split off and worked on a sheet from Teachers Pay Teachers dividing animals between vertebrates and invertebrates.

The boys watched a few videos on Youtube and took notes about the 5 different Kingdoms and then the differences between Vertebrates and Invertebrates.  Those last 2 links also have quizzes they can take associated with them.

On Day 2 & 3, we learned about the different classes of vertebrates and invertebrates.  We made a notebook page for each one (one side of a piece of cardstock), use the lapbook pages from Homeschool Share to provide an overview, and then watched a video for more facts.  Then we glued some pictures to our pages of animals in each class.  Here are links to the videos we used:
