Zoology Unit 2: Invertebrates
So, here’s the thing… it’s H-O-T in Texas in the summer. Or in this case, even at the end of May. And I don’t really like the heat. So, I’m organizing this unit so we are studying the things that don’t require as much outside time first.
That means we’re starting with an in-depth look at Invertebrates. If you missed the work and videos that provided an overview of animal classification through the class levels, you can find it here.
We started the unit by watching Bill Nye the Science Guy’s video on Invertebrates. (Yes, I am aware that he doesn’t have the same biblical view as we do but I’m screening videos before we watch them and my kids enjoy the way he teaches)
We did this review document to look at examples of each of the classes.
Then I choose some animals from each class to study more in depth. I have kids that learn in different ways, so we end up covering the same information in different ways.
Cnidarians
JellyFish –
Mollusks – We used this complete lapbook that includes details about slugs and octopus.
Enchinoderms – Starfish
Annelids – EarthWorm
We spent the most time studying Arthropod’s because they are the largest animal class on the planet! For that, I purchased the Arthropod science notebook from The Good and The Beautiful. I’m going to write a seperate blog post just about this book!
And then finally, I’m always work to tie in writing with our unit studies. The younger two had to write about each animal we explored. Just a sentence or two using the prompt “The <insert animal> is interesting because…”. The older two had to pick an invertebrate animal we did NOT study to research and write a report on. My goal is to work on their report writing skills as we go through the zoology unit, but for this one, I let them lead and write it how they wanted.
